Berlin-based digital green energy provider Ostrom has raised €20 million in a Series B round led by Eneco Ventures, the investment arm of Dutch energy company Eneco. The round also saw participation from existing investors SE Ventures, Union Square Ventures, Adjacent, Übermorgen, and J12.
This brings Ostrom’s total funding to over €40 million. The investment comes on the heels of rapid growth in 2024, including a tripling of its customer base and the launch of what it calls Germany’s largest electric vehicle Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
Ostrom operates at the intersection of digital innovation and sustainability, offering 100% certified green electricity through a fully digital, user-friendly platform. Customers benefit from flexible, transparent pricing models — SimplyFair and SimplyDynamic — with real-time control via the Ostrom app.
"We are excited to support Ostrom on their growth journey. Their rapid customer adoption and digital-first approach set a new standard for energy retailers," said Jan van der Velde, Investment Director at Eneco Ventures.
The new capital will be used to expand Ostrom’s smart meter rollout across Germany. By subsidizing installations, the company aims to boost demand-side flexibility and enable more users to optimize their electricity use in real time.
Ostrom is also investing heavily in automation. Currently, more than 50% of customer service requests are resolved through AI, allowing the company to scale with a lean, efficient team structure.
A major focus of the funding is the continued development of Ostrom’s NeoGrid™ Virtual Power Plant. The platform connects household devices and electric vehicles to the grid, helping balance supply and demand, increase the use of renewable energy, and lower consumer costs.
“This Series B funding round represents more than just capital — it's about strategic partnership,” said Matthias Martensen, Co-Founder & CEO of Ostrom. “Eneco brings deep industry expertise while Ostrom maintains full independence.”
Launched in 2021 by Matthias Martensen and Karl Villanueva, Ostrom is built on the idea that energy should be fair, simple, and sustainable. As a certified B Corp™, the company is recognized for its environmental commitment and user-centric technology.
Its app connects with solar panels, EVs, and battery storage, allowing households to monitor, manage, and reduce their energy costs — all while supporting grid stability and renewable integration.
"Combining Eneco’s energy veterancy with Ostrom’s relentless product and customer focus enables us to use AI as a powerful multiplier," said Villanueva, who also serves as CMO and CPO.
Eneco Ventures brings a history of successful energy investments, including Thermondo (acquired by E.ON) and Next Kraftwerke (acquired by Shell). The firm supports startups across Europe driving change in energy generation, efficiency, and grid technology.
Returning investors SE Ventures, Union Square Ventures, Adjacent, Übermorgen, and J12 continue to support Ostrom's long-term vision for a smarter, more sustainable energy future.
