Enerpoly Receives $600K Grant to Accelerate Breakthrough Zinc-Ion Battery

Swedish company specializing in zinc-ion battery technology, has secured a significant two-year grant from Vinnova

Sweden-based Enerpoly, a pioneering zinc-ion battery developer, has been awarded a significant two-year grant by Vinnova, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems, totaling $600,000. This grant will play a pivotal role in advancing Enerpoly's breakthrough zinc-ion battery technology and driving its industrialization process.

Enerpoly's innovative approach aims to enhance the complex industrial procedures involved in manufacturing electrodes for zinc-ion batteries. The primary objectives of the Vinnova grant include boosting production volume and speed for various electrode fabrication steps by up to 50-fold while minimizing waste.

Enerpoly's Co-founder and CSO, Samer Nameer, expressed their enthusiasm for leading the charge in the renewable energy transition, emphasizing the global demand for sustainable and innovative battery solutions. He affirmed that the Vinnova grant would significantly support the company in meeting the growing demand for clean energy.

Collaborating closely with the Enerpoly team, Anwar Ahniyaz, Senior Researcher at the Research Institute of Sweden, acknowledged Enerpoly's pivotal role in establishing Sweden as a thriving cleantech ecosystem and a hub for renewable battery development. Enerpoly, with its highly skilled team of engineers and advanced R&D capabilities, is actively contributing to the advancement of renewable energy solutions.

As the demand for stationary energy is projected to grow by 15 times by 2030, the European region is compelled to expedite the development and production of cutting-edge battery technologies. Zinc-ion batteries stand out as a promising energy storage technology due to their cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and a robust supply chain, especially when compared to the more widely used lithium-ion battery technology. Moreover, they rely on geographically accessible materials, ensuring a resilient supply.

However, achieving the megawatt-hour (MWh) production levels required for large-scale stationary storage applications is a formidable challenge. Electrode fabrication represents the most critical and demanding stage in scaling up zinc-ion technology.

Enerpoly, established in 2018 by Co-founders Mylad Chamoun (CTO) and Samer Nameer (CSO), is a Stockholm-based deep tech company leveraging patented technology to develop and manufacture zinc-ion battery cells and packs. Their patented zinc-ion battery technology is founded on zinc and manganese, globally available, cost-effective, and recyclable raw materials sourced from Europe.

The grant from Vinnova is a substantial step toward reshaping the landscape of sustainable energy storage solutions, bringing us closer to a world powered by 100% clean energy.
