Enterprise AI company Cohere has secured an additional $100 million in a second close to its latest funding round, pushing the company's valuation to approximately $7 billion. The Toronto-based startup continues building momentum in the rapidly growing enterprise AI market, where organizations increasingly demand secure, sovereign solutions for sensitive data handling.
The fresh capital comes just months after Cohere's $500 million funding round, demonstrating strong investor appetite for the company's security-focused approach to enterprise artificial intelligence. New investors Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Nexxus Capital Management joined the round alongside existing backers AMD Ventures, Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), Inovia, NVIDIA, Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments), Radical Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures.
Cohere operates in a market where businesses and governments face mounting pressure to adopt AI while maintaining strict data control and regulatory compliance. Traditional consumer AI models often fall short of enterprise security requirements, creating opportunities for specialized players like Cohere to fill this gap.
"The strong investor demand following our first close last month is a big endorsement of our momentum deploying secure and sovereign AI for the enterprise," said Cohere's CFO Francois Chadwick. "We believe that Cohere's AI solutions are meeting an ignored demand in the market for technology that truly improves the efficiency of businesses and governments, while keeping full control of their data in their own hands."
The company plans to use the new funding to accelerate development and global adoption of its security-first enterprise AI technology. This includes rapid scaling of operations across North America, Asia-Pacific, and Europe to meet rising demand for secure AI solutions across public and private sectors.
Cohere recently launched its Command A series, featuring Command A Vision, Command A Reasoning, and Command A Translate models. These enterprise-grade AI models are designed specifically for high-stakes business applications, offering multilingual support and efficient private deployment capabilities requiring just two or fewer GPUs.
The models integrate with North, Cohere's fully private and customizable agentic AI platform built for organizations handling sensitive data. North-powered agents are already transforming operations in finance, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, energy, and government sectors, delivering significant efficiency gains while operating behind secured firewalls.
Cohere's growth strategy centers on partnerships with major global enterprises across multiple industries. Current partners include Dell, RBC, Bell, LG CNS, Fujitsu, and SAP, with the company recently expanding its collaboration with AMD to provide customers access to advanced compute infrastructure.
The company was founded with a focus on making businesses and governments more efficient through AI solutions that prioritize data security. Unlike repurposed consumer models, Cohere's approach enables organizations to maintain local data control, achieve better regulatory compliance, and preserve digital sovereignty.
Cohere has strengthened its leadership team significantly, bringing on former Meta Fundamental AI Research head Joelle Pineau as Chief AI Officer and former Uber executive Francois Chadwick as CFO to support its next growth phase.
The additional funding reflects investor confidence in Cohere's position within the generative AI space. BDC's participation signals particular interest in supporting Canadian AI innovation with global reach.
"Cohere is a leader in the generative AI space, which is key for our Canadian businesses to make significant productivity gains and for BDC as a development bank," said Geneviève Bouthillier, Executive Vice President, BDC Capital. "Cohere's continued focus on innovation, customer value, data privacy and vertically integrated AI applications makes them stand out in their field and should lead to them shaping the global landscape for AI."
The company's total funding now exceeds $600 million, positioning it among the most well-funded enterprise AI companies globally. With enterprise AI adoption accelerating across industries, Cohere appears well-positioned to capture market share in the security-conscious enterprise segment.
