Berlin-based medical technology company AMBOSS has secured €240 million in a new financing round. The company, known for its all-in-one knowledge platform for physicians, closed the round after converting to a European stock corporation (SE). The funding round marks a significant milestone as AMBOSS deepens its global footprint and expands beyond its core market of physicians.
The investment was led by long-term investors KIRKBI, M&G Investments, and Lightrock, with continued support from existing shareholders. While the exact valuation remains undisclosed, AMBOSS emphasized that the new funding enables greater flexibility and long-term planning, with investors aligned around a vision that could lead to a future IPO.
With over 1 million users in 180+ countries, AMBOSS has become a trusted digital partner for medical students, physicians, and, increasingly, other healthcare professionals. The platform’s content is developed by medical experts and powered by AI to support clinical decisions and ongoing education. In Germany, nearly every second inpatient treatment involves a physician using AMBOSS. In the US, its question bank has become a go-to resource for students and residents preparing for board exams.
“Technology will not replace health care professionals, but those who embrace it will lead the way,” said Dr. Madjid Salimi, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of AMBOSS.
By placing doctors at the center of its platform, AMBOSS positions itself not as a replacement for medical expertise but as a “co-pilot” that enhances it. Its model—expert content combined with AI delivery—continues to gain traction in both education and clinical environments.
According to AMBOSS, the funds will be used to invest in new technologies, enhance platform capabilities, and expand to additional healthcare segments like nursing. The company also plans to enter new international markets, reflecting a broader ambition to become the go-to resource across the entire healthcare landscape.
“Additional funds will go into further investment in technology and new market segments. Selective acquisitions will also continue to be part of our strategy,” said Benedikt Hochkirchen, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of AMBOSS.
Recent acquisitions, including Novaheal (a startup focused on nursing education) and NEJM Knowledge+ (a US-based board exam prep tool), signal AMBOSS’ intent to grow both its audience and offerings beyond physicians.
Founded in 2012 by a group of physicians, AMBOSS has grown into a global platform used at both the educational and clinical stages of a medical career. It began as a way to improve how medical knowledge is accessed and applied, and has since evolved into a digital assistant used by professionals in high-pressure decision-making environments.
The company now employs more than 500 people from 50+ countries, including over 150 physicians, engineers, and scientists. Its collaborative in-house approach ensures content is both medically rigorous and technically accessible.
“Providing precise and actionable recommendations on diagnostics and treatment based on the latest guidelines” has become a hallmark of AMBOSS’ offering.
This latest funding round marks a shift toward patient long-term capital. “We choose investors who are committed to our long-term vision and very flexible in the investment duration,” said Hochkirchen. Many of the new backers manage evergreen funds and are expected to stay with the company through an eventual IPO.
Peter Bason, Head of Private Capital at KIRKBI, noted, “Its unique platform is becoming a vital tool for both medical students and health care professionals, supporting learning and decision-making at every stage.”
Other investors include M&G Investments and Lightrock, both experienced in long-term support of mission-driven growth companies.
