Starship Technologies has closed a $50 million Series C funding round led by Plural, with participation from Karma.vc, Latitude, Coefficient Capital, SmartCap (funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU), and Skaala. The investment brings the company's total funding to more than $280 million as it prepares to replicate its success in European cities and U.S. university campuses across American urban markets.
The company, founded in 2014 by Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis, has established itself as the dominant player in autonomous delivery. With over 9 million deliveries completed across seven countries—five times more than all U.S. competitors combined—Starship operates the world's largest autonomous delivery fleet with 2,700 robots currently in service.
Starship operates at a scale no competitor has matched. The company's robots have covered over 12 million miles and make 2 autonomous road crossings per second, amassing a dataset that continuously improves safety, routing, and reliability. While other companies run pilot programs, Starship operates a proven logistics network across 270+ locations.
The company has solved challenges that still block competitors: safety validation, regulatory approval across seven countries, all-weather reliability, and profitability at scale. Operating at Level 4 autonomy, Starship maintains positive gross margins because autonomous deliveries are significantly more cost-efficient than traditional delivery methods.
"Delivery robotics is the next wave of urban logistics, shaping a once-in-a-generation shift in how goods move through cities," said Ahti Heinla, co-founder and CEO of Starship Technologies. "We own European urban markets, we own U.S. campuses. Now it's time to replicate this proven success in American cities. Millions of U.S. consumers will soon experience sub-30-minute delivery by Starship robots as the new standard."
The fresh capital will accelerate Starship's penetration into U.S. cities, building on its established presence across 30+ European cities and 60+ American university campuses. The company plans to grow its fleet from 2,700 robots today to over 12,000 by 2027, representing the largest deployment of autonomous delivery technology globally.
Starship's expansion strategy focuses on partnering with major retailers seeking proven autonomous delivery infrastructure. The company has already integrated with leading last-mile delivery platforms, including Grubhub in the U.S., alongside European platforms such as Bolt, DoorDash's Wolt, and Delivery Hero's Foodora. These partnerships position Starship as the autonomous delivery backbone powering major delivery apps.
Starship pioneered autonomous delivery in 2014 and has maintained its leadership ever since. The company's technology enables sub-30-minute deliveries while eliminating the costs and inefficiencies of traditional delivery methods. Each robot operates independently, navigating sidewalks and crossing streets safely to deliver goods directly to customers' doors.
The environmental benefits are substantial. Starship's zero-emission robots have prevented over 650 tonnes of CO2 emissions in European operations alone. As the fleet expands across U.S. cities, these environmental savings will multiply while reducing traffic congestion caused by traditional delivery vehicles.
The company's AI technology continuously learns from millions of deliveries, improving decision-making and safety with every trip. This data advantage creates a widening gap between Starship and potential competitors still working toward commercial viability.
"Starship has quietly built the most successful autonomous technology company in the world," said Taavet Hinrikus, Partner at Plural. "They're already deployed, already profitable, and already changing how goods move through cities. We've doubled down on our investment because the team has proven they can scale globally, and the opportunity in American urban markets is enormous."
Plural, an early-stage investment fund based in Tallinn, Estonia and London, UK, backs ambitious founders building technology companies with the potential for GDP-level impact. The firm launched in June 2022 with a mission to give serious founders in Europe investors with experience matching their ambition.
The funding round's investor syndicate includes Karma.vc, Latitude, Coefficient Capital, SmartCap, and Skaala, all of whom recognize Starship's position as the clear leader in autonomous delivery technology.
