Avelios Medical, a provider of next-generation hospital information systems (HIS), has secured €30 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from existing investors Revent and HTGF. This investment represents one of the largest Series A rounds in digital health in recent months, underscoring the demand for innovative healthcare technology.
With this funding, Avelios aims to position itself as the leading operating system for intelligent patient care. Sequoia Capital, known for backing industry giants like Apple, Nvidia, and Google, has placed its confidence in Avelios’ potential to drive healthcare digitization.
The hospital IT landscape is at a critical juncture, especially in Europe. SAP’s decision to exit the HIS market by 2030 has left hundreds of hospitals searching for new solutions. This shift presents a rare opportunity to modernize hospital infrastructure, improving both efficiency and patient care.
Outdated hospital IT systems have significant consequences. In Germany alone, preventable medication errors claim 65,000 lives each year—exceeding road traffic fatalities (Sources: BARMER, WHO). Additionally, a Marburger Bund study found that doctors spend over three hours daily on administrative tasks, highlighting the urgent need for more efficient digital solutions.
Avelios plans to use the newly raised capital to expand its AI-powered hospital information system. The company is focused on reducing documentation burdens for healthcare professionals, integrating data across departments, and enabling AI-driven medical innovations, such as automated diagnostics.
Its modular microservices architecture allows hospitals to implement Avelios' software either step-by-step or as a full replacement. The platform also meets the highest security standards, with all data stored in secure European data centers or within hospital infrastructure.
Founded by three healthcare entrepreneurs, Avelios Medical has developed an HIS from the ground up, designed to empower healthcare professionals rather than overburden them. The company’s platform covers everything from treatment documentation and administrative processes to an integrated patient portal.
By structuring data throughout the entire patient journey, Avelios enables hospitals to harness AI’s full potential, facilitating innovations such as automated diagnostics and real-time treatment insights.
Avelios' customer base already includes some of Germany’s largest healthcare institutions. Notable users include the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Hannover Medical School, and Sana—a major private hospital chain with 56 facilities.
"Building a complete hospital information system, including documentation, admin, billing, patient portal and more, is not for the faint-hearted, yet this is precisely what Avelios has built. We were astounded by the depth and breadth of the product, as well as the feedback from their customers, which count some of the largest public and private hospitals in Germany," said Anas Biad, Partner at Sequoia Capital.
Christian Albrecht, co-founder of Avelios, added, "Sequoia has consciously turned away from the classic, short-term investment cycle and focuses on companies that solve fundamental problems. The digitization of patient care requires long-term thinking and sustainable innovation. With Sequoia, we can deliver exactly that – a system built to stand the test of time."
