Axelera AI has secured up to €61.6 million through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU) and member states, reinforcing its mission to develop high-performance, energy-efficient AI hardware. This announcement aligns with Axelera AI’s recent, oversubscribed Series B raise of $68 million, bringing its total funding to more than $200 million in just three years.
The fresh financing supports Titania™, Axelera AI’s new chiplet specifically designed to handle intensive AI inference workloads at competitive cost and power consumption. This technology extends the company’s existing approach to Digital In-Memory Computing (D-IMC) and RISC-V vector extensions, enabling scalable performance for high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
As part of the DARE consortium, Axelera AI will collaborate with the EuroHPC JU to foster a European supercomputing ecosystem. The Titania chiplet and its near-linear scalability address urgent industry concerns about efficiency, cost, and sustainability as AI workloads continue to grow.
“I am proud to announce the launch of the DARE project which marks a significant milestone for European digital sovereignty,” said Anders Jensen, EuroHPC JU Executive Director. “This ambitious initiative will drive innovation in both hardware and software technologies and leverage the full power of HPC and AI to develop secure, efficient and European-led solutions for the future.”
This funding will bolster Axelera AI’s research and development teams across the Netherlands, Italy, and Belgium. The company intends to further refine Titania’s design to target a 2028 deployment date—an effort aimed at surpassing the performance of current AI inference solutions.
Multiple Titania chiplets will be packaged into a System-in-Package (SiP), delivering the efficiency of edge-oriented architecture while meeting the rigorous demands of HPC, data centers, automotive, robotics, and beyond. By combining D-IMC technology with RISC-V capabilities, Axelera AI expects near-linear performance growth with less power and cooling overhead compared to conventional scaling approaches.
Founded in July 2021 and headquartered in the AI Innovation Center at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, Axelera AI has rapidly built an international presence. More than 200 employees span offices in Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, and the UK, reflecting the company’s commitment to global AI innovation.
“Our D-IMC technology leverages a future-proof, scalable multi-AI-core architecture, ensuring unparalleled adaptability and efficiency. Enhanced with proprietary RISC-V vector extensions, this versatile mixed-precision platform is engineered to excel across diverse AI workloads,” explained Evangelos Eleftheriou, CTO and co-founder of Axelera AI. “Uniquely, our architecture facilitates scaling from the edge to the cloud, streamlining expansion and optimizing performance in ways that traditional cloud-to-edge approaches cannot. We are setting a new standard for AI infrastructure, making true scalability a tangible reality.”
Axelera AI’s existing Metis™ AI Platform is already available for those seeking to accelerate computer vision at a fraction of current solutions’ cost and energy usage. According to Co-Founder and CEO Fabrizio Del Maffeo, Titania will build on these capabilities to serve much broader HPC and data center applications.
“This is an important milestone and validation of our technology. Since Axelera AI was founded in July 2021, we have continuously delivered technologies to help customers tackle the AI industry’s biggest challenges and efficiently implement AI capabilities into their products,” said Del Maffeo. “Today, we deliver a hardware and software platform for accelerating computer vision on edge devices at a fraction of the cost and energy consumption of current solutions. Titania builds upon this unique product suite. We’re grateful to the EuroHPC DARE Project and the countries involved for helping accelerate the development of this AI inference technology for HPC data centers.”
While Axelera AI’s latest funding primarily comes from the EuroHPC JU for the DARE project, its Series B round attracted significant attention, bringing together investors from various industries eager to shape the future of AI and HPC.
