Blue Onion, the financial data infrastructure platform trusted by brands like Supergoop!, BarkBox, and a.k.a. Brands, has raised $10 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Viola FinTech and brings the company’s total funding to $17.6 million. Notable returning investors include Y Combinator, Entrée Capital, Green Visor, and Vinyl Capital.
The startup provides a subledger platform tailored for retail and e-commerce companies. Its system delivers accurate, fully reconciled, transaction-level financial data that’s ready for automation. Unlike traditional ERPs or modern accounting tools that often rely on patchy integrations, Blue Onion eliminates manual processes with its AI-powered reconciliation algorithms that match orders, payments, and cash receipts in real time.
Accounting teams across retail and e-commerce continue to face time-consuming and error-prone processes when trying to close their books. Blue Onion offers a scalable solution that streamlines accounting workflows, improves reliability, and saves teams hundreds of hours of manual work.
"We believe that there's a better way to process financial data," said Lyndsey Bunting, CEO and co-founder of Blue Onion. "The Blue Onion platform integrates with your order systems, payment processors, and your bank accounts to fully automate the reconciliation process."
Noam Inbar, Partner at Viola FinTech, added: "As the world rapidly shifts toward a new era powered by generative AI, the foundation of this transformation lies in having a single source of truth—reliable, accurate data."
With the new capital, Blue Onion plans to launch advanced AI features, support more financial accounts, and increase the platform’s customization capabilities. These developments aim to refine automation and help teams book transactions with even greater accuracy and less manual intervention.
The company also plans to strengthen its community through strategic partnerships, events, and educational initiatives. These efforts are designed to help finance professionals navigate the shift toward automation while maintaining high standards of data quality.
Blue Onion was founded in 2020 by Lyndsey Bunting (CEO), Charley McMillian (CTO), and Manav Malhotra (Chief Data Scientist). The idea was born from Bunting’s experience as VP of Finance at Birchbox, where she encountered firsthand the challenges of obtaining clean, accurate data within traditional accounting systems.
Today, Blue Onion stands out as the only subledger focused specifically on retailers. It allows brands to close their books daily—not monthly—and ensures confidence in financial reporting from transaction to bank.
