Comun, a digital bank dedicated to serving immigrants in the U.S., has successfully closed a $21.5 million Series A funding round. This significant investment comes less than nine months after the startup raised $4.5 million in an earlier round, showcasing its rapid growth and strong investor confidence.
In a competitive sector crowded with startups like Tanda, Bloom Money, and Majority, Comun’s ability to attract substantial investment in such a short period highlights its impressive progress. The company, founded by Andres Santos and Abiel Gutierrez, has seen its valuation surge by over 50% since its last funding round. Santos, however, challenged PitchBook’s previous valuation estimate of $62 million, asserting that Comun’s current valuation is even higher.
Comun’s appeal to investors is driven by its remarkable growth metrics. The startup reported a 50-fold increase in monthly revenue in the first half of 2024. Although this initial revenue was modest, the rapid adoption rate is notable. Additionally, Comun has increased both its user base and revenue per user by approximately four times since the beginning of the year.
Founded in late 2021, Comun emerged from the personal experiences of Santos and Gutierrez, who faced financial exclusion when migrating from Mexico. Their mission was to create a digital banking solution that addresses the unique needs of Latino immigrants, offering services such as instant payments, cash withdrawals, check deposits, and early paychecks. The bank’s user-friendly approach includes providing Spanish-speaking customer support seven days a week and accepting a wide range of ID types from Latin America, which contrasts with traditional banks’ stricter requirements.
Santos points out that many immigrants avoid traditional banks due to barriers like required U.S. Social Security numbers or proof of address. Comun aims to eliminate these hurdles and prevent fraud, making banking more accessible for the Latino community. The startup has seen significant traction, particularly in states like California, Florida, Georgia, New York, and Texas.
Comun’s recent launch of a remittance product has been well-received, with customers averaging 3.1 remittances per month. The company is now on track to process over $1 billion in annual payment volume. Originally using Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) middleware, Comun transitioned to owning its infrastructure and partnered with Community Federal Savings Bank in late 2023. This move has been beneficial, especially considering recent challenges faced by fintechs relying on BaaS providers like Synapse.
With no fees for account opening and no minimum balance requirements, Comun generates revenue from interchange fees, remittance fees, and interest on deposits. The startup is actively working to diversify its revenue streams, reducing its reliance on interchange fees.
The Series A funding round, led by Redpoint Ventures and supported by ANIMO Ventures, Costanoa Ventures, FJ Labs, RTP Global, and South Park Commons, will fuel Comun’s expansion and product development. The company plans to hire former Nubank and Capital One employees to develop new credit products and further enhance its offerings.
Redpoint Ventures’ Meera Clark praised Comun’s metrics and organic demand as some of the best in fintech, noting the strong technical background of its team. As Comun continues to grow, it remains focused on improving financial accessibility for immigrant communities across the U.S.
