Diode Computers, Inc. has secured $11.4 million in Series A funding, led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Y Combinator, Caffeinated Capital, and BoxGroup. This funding round aims to accelerate Diode’s innovative approach to designing and manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs) faster and more efficiently.

With the investment, Diode aims to address longstanding challenges in PCB design—traditionally a painstaking, weeks-long process that demands specialized skills. By converting PCB layouts into clear, Python-based code using proprietary AI tools, Diode simplifies error detection, allows easy customization, and facilitates rapid scaling in manufacturing.

Addressing PCB Industry Bottlenecks

PCBs are critical to electronics but historically suffer from slow, cumbersome design processes that can stall innovation. Traditional Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools often involve siloed design practices, multiple manual exports, and tedious communications with fabricators, leading to costly delays and frequent revisions.

"Modern semiconductor toolchains can verify billions of transistors, yet the software that routes copper on a postcard-sized fiberglass slab can’t protect engineers from simple blunders," said Diode co-founder Davide Asnaghi. Diode’s platform seeks to bridge this significant gap in the PCB workflow, streamlining the design process and minimizing errors.

Investing in Innovation and Expansion

Diode plans to use the new capital primarily for product development, market expansion, and hiring specialized talent to bolster its technical and operational capabilities. The company is committed to rapidly scaling its advanced PCB compiler, enhancing its ability to accommodate more fabricators and diverse customer needs.

Looking ahead, Diode aims to evolve beyond existing tools by integrating deeper AI-driven insights into electrical, thermal, and mechanical constraints. The goal is a seamless, highly automated experience—from initial schematic to final product—effectively replacing traditional, cumbersome PCB design methods.

Revolutionizing PCB Design with Software-like Flexibility

Founded by Davide Asnaghi and Lenny Khazan during Y Combinator’s Summer 2024 batch, Diode combines deep technical expertise with a clear vision: making hardware design as simple as writing software. Davide, previously with Apple and Butterfly Network, saw firsthand how PCB-related issues significantly delayed production.

The company’s unique approach involves open-source, Python-readable code combined with an ultra-fast Rust-based verification core. Unlike legacy methods, Diode directly incorporates shop-specific manufacturing constraints, significantly reducing revision cycles and speeding up delivery.

Currently, Diode works with high-profile customers like Physical Intelligence and Saronic, as well as several Fortune 100 companies. Diode’s software enables a single engineer to produce over 100 unique board designs annually, a major advancement in industry efficiency.

Strong Investor Confidence

Beyond the lead investor Andreessen Horowitz, Diode benefits from continued backing by renowned early-stage investors like Y Combinator, Caffeinated Capital, and BoxGroup. This strong support underscores confidence in Diode’s mission and its ability to disrupt traditional PCB workflows.

"Electronics is where software meets the real world," Davide explained. Diode’s mission aligns directly with a broader trend of reshoring manufacturing and the urgent need for quicker hardware development cycles in sectors like robotics, aerospace, and medical devices.
