Edacious, a company focused on measuring and verifying food nutrition, has raised $8.1 million in seed funding. This investment will help expand its research, enhance its technology, and bring more transparency to food production.
The round was led by Patagonia’s Tin Shed Ventures, known for backing sustainability-focused businesses. Other participants include Nest Family Office, Trailhead Capital, Grantham Environmental Trust's Neglected Climate Opportunities, iSelect Capital, First Thirty, and Pelican Ag, alongside several private investors.
The way we measure food quality today is outdated. The food industry focuses on quantity, not nutrition, leading to declining food quality and poor health outcomes. Edacious aims to change that.
"At Edacious, we have the data and technology to reveal how genetics, soil health, and management practices impact nutrition in our food," said Eric Smith, Edacious founder and CEO. "This funding allows us to build the platform necessary to break the cycle of commoditization by empowering producers and consumers with verified, actionable data for food quality differentiation."
Most consumers assume that all apples, carrots, or grains contain the same nutrients. However, Edacious’ research shows that nutrient levels can vary up to 10 times within the same food group. By analyzing over 200 key compounds, the company is revealing hidden nutritional differences that could impact health, food production, and policy decisions.
"Nutritional transparency has the potential to reshape our food system," said Paul Lightfoot, General Manager of Patagonia Provisions. "Edacious' approach not only advances soil health but also empowers producers and consumers with critical data to make informed choices. We're proud to support a company making such a profound impact on both human and environmental health."
Edacious will use this funding to scale operations, enhance its proprietary analysis tools, and expand collaborations across the food system.
One of its main initiatives is a next-generation food lab, designed to replace costly, incomplete testing methods with a faster, more affordable solution. This lab can measure vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, making it easier for food companies to verify and communicate food quality.
Additionally, Edacious will continue developing its science-based software platform, which enables users to compare, benchmark, and share nutritional data. This will help food producers, retailers, and policymakers make better decisions based on real nutritional insights.
"Nutrient density should be the catalyst for full food and agriculture value chain transformation," said Pete Oberle of Trailhead Capital. "Edacious is making that possible by measuring and mapping nutrient density 10 times faster and cheaper, with an intuitive interface that incentivizes and enables the best regenerative practices from producer to consumer."
Founded in 2020, Edacious is a technology company focused on redefining how we measure and understand food quality.
The company was founded by Eric Smith, who serves as CEO, and has built a team specializing in food science, data analytics, and agricultural technology.
What makes Edacious different is its focus on making food quality measurable and comparable. While food labels provide basic nutritional facts, they often miss critical details about how nutrient levels vary across different food sources. Edacious is closing this gap by providing real-time, verified data on food nutrition.
Edacious’ funding round was backed by investors committed to sustainability, food transparency, and regenerative agriculture.
