Estonian Startup Arbonics Secures €5.5M to Scale Forest Carbon Removal Platform

Estonia has witnessed a remarkable surge in startup funding, soaring to an impressive €147.3 million

Estonian startups have been making waves in the investment landscape, with the cumulative total reaching €147.3 million in the first three quarters of 2023. In this dynamic ecosystem, Arbonics, a climate tech startup, has emerged as a standout player, closing a €5.5 million seed investment round. This funding, led by NordicNinja, known for its strategic investments in Einride, Bolt, Plural, and Tilia Impact Ventures, positions Arbonics as a key player in the climate tech arena.

Arbonics is on a mission to develop the highest-quality, scalable forest carbon removal platform in Europe. Building on its previous success with a €1.8 million pre-seed funding round last year, this recent investment brings Arbonics' total funding to €7.3 million. The infusion of fresh capital will play a pivotal role in addressing the increasing demand for quality carbon removal.

With ambitious plans on the horizon, Arbonics will channel the funds to expand its product portfolio, covering the entire forestry lifecycle. The startup aims to grow its team, extending its reach to cover 50% of European forests in the upcoming year. Additionally, the investment will enable Arbonics to enhance its impact assessments for biodiversity, triple its team size, and establish a scientific advisory board.

Addressing the globally acknowledged challenge of carbon removal, Arbonics positions itself at the forefront of nature-based solutions to combat climate change, with a particular focus on forestry. Forests play a pivotal role in carbon mitigation, and Arbonics seeks to revolutionize how we manage and leverage this vital resource.

The Arbonics platform simplifies the complex task of calculating the carbon removal potential of land, making it accessible for landowners. Founded in early 2022 by Kristjan Lepik and Lisett Luik, Arbonics utilizes data sources and expert forest knowledge to analyze the carbon potential of land or forests swiftly, taking less than a minute.

Arbonics' innovative approach extends beyond afforestation, covering existing forests and attracting increasing demand from landowners in Europe and beyond. The fully developed and operational tool has proven successful in the Baltics and Finland, setting the stage for further scalability.

Kristjan Lepik, CEO of Arbonics, expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the recent funding, emphasizing the company's role as a catalyst for meaningful change. Lepik highlighted the importance of transparency in forest carbon projects, positioning Arbonics as a pioneer in setting new standards for the nature-based removals industry.

Taavet Hinrikus, Partner at Plural, acknowledged Arbonics' unique approach, emphasizing the urgency of scalable solutions empowered by nature and technology. Rainer Sternfeld, Managing Partner at NordicNinja, underscored Arbonics' potential to make a significant difference in the sector, signaling a strong commitment to the startup's and the planet's future.

As Arbonics propels itself forward with a clear vision and strategic support, it stands poised to make a lasting impact in the crucial realm of transparent carbon removal, bridging the gap between technology and sustainable forest management.
