fonio.ai, a Vienna-based AI platform that automates customer phone calls for small and medium-sized businesses, has closed a $17 million seed round that places it among the top 1% of European seed rounds in the past two years. The company was founded in 2024 by Daniel Keinrath and Matthias Gruber, two builders who started writing software and launching companies well before they finished school. Their product targets a specific, painful problem: businesses that rely on the phone as their primary customer channel but cannot keep up with call volume on their own.
Small businesses lose more money to missed calls than most owners realize. Research shows that 62% of calls to small businesses go unanswered during normal hours, and 85% of callers who do not get a response never try again. The numbers add up fast. Studies estimate the average SMB loses over $126,000 in revenue annually from unanswered calls. For industries like healthcare, trades, and legal services, a single missed call can represent thousands in lifetime customer value. AI voice agents address exactly this gap, and investment in the space is accelerating. Voice AI funding surged eightfold to $2.1 billion in 2025, and production deployments grew 340% year-over-year across 500 or more organizations.
The $17 million seed round was led by 20VC, with participation from existing investors and from founders and executives at Synthesia, HubSpot, and Revolut. The round values fonio.ai at $140 million. It follows a $3.9 million angel round closed in December 2025 from investors with early backing in Facebook and Airbnb, bringing total funding to over $20 million.
The AI voice agent market is moving from pilot to production at speed. The global market was valued at $2.54 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $35.24 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 39% from 2026 to 2033. Demand is driven by two converging forces: customers who expect instant, 24/7 access to businesses, and businesses that cannot afford to staff phone lines around the clock. For many SMBs, the phone is not a support channel, it is the business. Plumbers, dental clinics, car dealerships, property managers — they all live and die by whether the call gets picked up.
The challenge until now has been quality. Early voice bots were easy to detect and easy to reject. Callers would hang up the moment they sensed a script. What has changed is the underlying technology: better speech recognition, turn-detection models that handle interruptions naturally, and emotion recognition that adapts in real time. fonio.ai says that in roughly 90% of cases, its agent completes the conversation end-to-end without transferring to a human. That is the threshold where automation actually sticks.
"Every small and mid-sized business knows the cost of a missed call. What Daniel, Matthias and the team are building next is the AI-first operating system for SMBs: one platform that handles communication across every channel and replaces the patchwork of tools these businesses are forced to stitch together today. The traction so far has been remarkable, and we believe they're the absolute best team to build the category-defining company in this space." — Paul Bonnet, General Partner at 20VC
fonio.ai plans to use the capital to expand its product, grow its team, and establish offices in six new cities. The company is moving beyond phone calls into a full omnichannel platform. WhatsApp is already live. Email and chat support are due in the next three months. Alongside the channel expansion, the company is building its own tooling layer: a proprietary calendar is live, and a CRM purpose-built for AI-managed customer interactions is set to launch by end of Q3 2026.
This product direction reflects a deliberate bet. Rather than connect AI agents to existing software that was never designed for automation, fonio.ai is building everything from the ground up so that AI sits at the center. The vision is a single platform that replaces the five to ten separate tools an SMB currently stitches together to manage scheduling, communication, and customer data.
The team added $1 million in ARR in April alone and is targeting a 5x revenue increase by year-end. On the hiring front, the company plans to open offices in New York, Munich, Milan, Paris, London, Warsaw, and Barcelona, with multiple hires planned in each city before the end of the year.
fonio.ai was founded in Vienna in 2024 and built its AI infrastructure from scratch. CEO Daniel Keinrath started his first companies as a teenager and exited his ad-tech startup Getnano in 2024. CTO Matthias Gruber began writing software at 14 and went on to become Vice European Champion in web development. The founding team is builder-heavy: more than half of the company's 40 employees come from founding backgrounds, operations roles, or have previously scaled products at companies like Canva.
The platform currently handles inbound and outbound calls across a range of use cases, including customer support, appointment booking, lead qualification, and outbound campaigns. Behind the product is a proprietary stack built across the layers that determine call quality: speech recognition tuned for challenging dialects, a turn-detection model that processes pauses and interruptions without awkward gaps, and real-time emotion recognition that adjusts tone during the conversation. The orchestration layer connects these models to a company's existing systems in real time.
fonio.ai leads the DACH market — Germany, Austria, and Switzerland — and is gaining traction in France and Italy. Customers include Volkswagen, Brita, and Storebox. The company also acquired its Linz-based competitor fluently in September 2025.
"We are excited to welcome 20VC as our lead investor and grateful to our existing partners for their continued support. With this round, fonio.ai will accelerate the development of our AI agent, accelerate our internationalization, and continue to build the team that makes it possible. What we're building is a global category leader, and we'll continue to do so from Europe." — Daniel Keinrath, Co-Founder & CEO of fonio.ai
The seed round was led by 20VC, the London-based venture capital firm founded by Harry Stebbings. 20VC manages over $800 million in AUM and counts more than 40 unicorn founders among its limited partners. The firm has backed companies including Lovable, Linear, Airwallex, Legora, and Factory AI. It also runs the most-listened-to venture podcast in the world, with over 40 million plays per month.
Participating investors in this round include founders and executives from Synthesia, HubSpot, and Revolut. The earlier $3.9 million angel round, closed in December 2025, included early backers of Facebook and Airbnb. Total funding across both rounds now exceeds $20 million.
