Halter, a New Zealand-based agtech company focused on virtual fencing and animal management, has raised $100 million in a Series D funding round. The latest investment brings the company’s valuation to $1 billion, reinforcing its position as a major player in ranching technology.
The round was led by BOND, with participation from NewView Capital and continued support from existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners, DCVC, Blackbird Ventures, Icehouse Ventures, and Promus Ventures.
Halter provides a system that allows ranchers to manage their herds remotely. Using smart collars, sound and vibration cues guide cattle, replacing traditional fencing. The collars are paired with an app and connectivity towers, giving ranchers 24/7 oversight of their livestock and land.
“Halter ranchers are more profitable and get better outcomes for the environment and their animals,” said CEO Craig Piggott. “We’re deeply grateful for the trust of our early ranchers and farmers – we wouldn’t be here without them.”
The newly raised funds will be used to expand operations across the United States, where Halter already supports around 150 ranchers in 18 states. A growing US-based team will play a key role in onboarding thousands more.
Over half of American ranchers are over the age of 55, and rural labor shortages remain a serious concern. Halter aims to address this by enabling smaller teams to manage larger herds with fewer hands on the ground.
Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Auckland, Halter was created to simplify how farmers manage livestock. Today, it supports ranchers and dairy farmers in New Zealand, Australia, and the US, with new farms coming online daily. The company also has a US office in Boulder, Colorado, and employs over 200 people globally.
Halter’s rapid growth and focus on solving real pain points in the agriculture sector earned it the top spot on New Zealand’s Deloitte Fast50 index, naming it the country’s fastest-growing company.
“I’m really proud of our team – we’re passionate about supporting ranchers and we’re excited about the journey ahead,” added Piggott.
BOND’s Daegwon Chae, General Partner, highlighted the scale of the market opportunity: “Cattle-based products generate over $1 trillion annually. Ranches feed billions but are still stuck with offline bottlenecks like labor and time. Halter is building the digital operating system for farms and ranches globally. We’re thrilled to partner with them.”
The company’s early and continued backers include major names in venture capital like Bessemer Venture Partners, DCVC, Blackbird, Icehouse Ventures, and Promus Ventures, each contributing to Halter’s path from startup to unicorn.
