Rapido, the bike-taxi startup that's been reshaping India's mobility landscape, has achieved unicorn status with a fresh $120 million funding boost. This latest round, spearheaded by WestBridge Capital, values the eight-year-old company at a remarkable $1 billion, according to a recent regulatory filing.
The Series E funding highlights Rapido’s increasing influence in a sector traditionally dominated by giants like Uber and Ola. By focusing on two-wheeler transportation, Rapido has sidestepped the typical challenges faced by traditional cab services and tapped into the bustling market of motorcycle and scooter rides in India’s crowded cities.
Rapido’s strategic partnership with Swiggy, which previously led its $800 million funding round in April 2022, further strengthens its position. Swiggy views Rapido as a crucial ally in the food delivery space, where Rapido’s bike-taxi network complements Swiggy’s delivery services. This partnership not only enhances Swiggy’s competitive edge against Zomato but also provides Rapido’s drivers with ample job opportunities.
With this latest round of investment, Rapido has now raised approximately $430 million to date. The company also engaged with Khazanah, Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, to secure additional funding.
Swiggy, preparing for its own initial public offering with plans to raise $1.25 billion, is expected to increase its stake in Rapido post-IPO. This move reflects a broader trend of rapid growth and investment in India’s tech and mobility sectors.
Rapido's ascent to unicorn status marks it as the third Indian startup to achieve this milestone this year, following fintech Perfios and AI innovator Krutrim.
