In a world where chocolate prices soar to unprecedented heights due to climate woes, a beacon of hope emerges from Germany. Enter Planet A Foods, a pioneering startup on a mission to transform the confectionery landscape with sustainable and delectable alternatives.

Fresh off a groundbreaking Series A funding round of $15.4 million, led by European climate venture fundWorld Fund, and joined by notable investors such as Omnes Capital and Cherry Ventures, Planet A Foods is poised to revolutionize the chocolate industry.

Armed with this capital infusion, Planet A Foods is set to propel its innovative cocoa-free chocolate, ChoViva, into international markets, starting with a foray into the UK. With a focus on expanding its fermentation platform beyond cocoa to other plant-based ingredients, the startup aims to cement its position as a trailblazer in chocolate alternatives and fermented ingredients.

Moreover, a portion of the funding will bolster production capacity at Planet A Foods' factory, enabling the production of 750 kg of ChoViva per hour within a state-of-the-art, IFS-certified environment.

Looking ahead to 2024, Planet A Foods has an ambitious roadmap, including a lineup of product launches and strategic hires to fortify its 40+ strong team in Germany. The company is also embarking on global expansion efforts, engaging in discussions with key distribution partners across Europe, Asia, and the US.

Founded in 2021 by twin siblings Drs. Max and Sara Marquart, Planet A Foods was born out of a shared passion for sustainability and a commitment to combatting the cocoa crisis. Max, a material scientist, and Sara, a food chemist and biotechnology expert, joined forces to create ChoViva—a cocoa alternative crafted from locally-sourced ingredients like oats and sunflower seeds.

Reflecting on their journey, Dr. Max Marquart, CEO of Planet A Foods, emphasizes the urgency of their mission, stating, "In the future, chocolate will become more expensive than caviar unless new steps are taken." With ChoViva, Planet A Foods seeks to alleviate the strain on the cocoa supply chain while delivering a delectable, planet-friendly treat to consumers worldwide.

Echoing his sentiments, Dr. Sara Marquart, CTO of Planet A Foods, underscores the pivotal role of the Series A funding in advancing their technology platform and expanding their product portfolio.

As chocolate prices reach historic highs and climate concerns loom large, Planet A Foods stands as a beacon of innovation and sustainability in the confectionery realm. With their cocoa-free marvel, ChoViva, and a steadfast commitment to reshaping the future of chocolate, the startup is poised to make waves in 2024 and beyond.
