Planted, a Cologne-based green tech startup, has secured 5 million euros in a Seed round to boost its position in the highly competitive ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) software arena. Although it’s too early for a post-money valuation to be publicly discussed, this substantial round underscores the market’s confidence in both Planted’s technology and the team behind it.
Leading the charge is TechVision Fonds (TVF), backed by WENVEST Capital, neoteq ventures, AWS Gründungsfonds, and Smart Infrastructure Ventures. Well-known angel investors, including Nina Kani, Felix Schürholz (Co-Founder & MD SoSafe), Frank Piotraschke (CRO SoSafe), Arno Nonnen, and Julius Göllner (ARRtist), have also contributed.
The ESG market is crowded with solutions aiming to help companies meet evolving regulations and demands. Planted stands out by offering more than compliance checklists. Its platform integrates AI-driven carbon measurement, decarbonization strategies, and local environmental projects—such as planting or protecting mixed forests—in a single solution. According to Planted’s CEO and Co-Founder, the mission is to turn regulatory obligations, like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), into opportunities for real change.
A spokesperson from TechVision Fonds points out that Planted’s combination of cutting-edge automation and tangible sustainability outcomes has the potential to redefine industry standards. This broader context matters because many companies are looking for a way to align eco-friendly initiatives with strong financial performance, and Planted positions itself as the bridge between the two.
Planted intends to direct a substantial portion of its 5 million euros toward ramping up product development. That includes further refining its AI engine to extract relevant ESG data, perform materiality analyses, and guide enterprises through meaningful CO₂ reductions—often exceeding 50%. By streamlining these processes, Planted aims to save companies up to 75% of the time typically spent on sustainability reporting.
Beyond product innovation, the team is eyeing strategic hiring and market expansion. New CFO Julian Grunewald brings seasoned financial expertise, while CPO Jonas Quilitz is shaping the platform’s roadmap. Over the coming months, Planted plans to broaden its European reach and collaborate with local organizations to create more region-specific environmental efforts.
Founded in 2021 by Cindy Schüller, Heinrich Rauh, Wilhelm Hammes, and Jan Borchert, Planted has evolved into a front-running green tech venture. Planted highlights its vision of turning ESG from a data-heavy obligation into a powerful tool that drives meaningful change. By combining robust technology with consulting services, Planted addresses corporate sustainability in a holistic manner.
The leadership team gained momentum when Jonas Quilitz joined as Chief Product Officer in early 2023, focusing on AI-enhanced workflow. With Grunewald stepping in as CFO, Planted’s board now includes experts who blend technological, financial, and sustainability know-how. This breadth of expertise aims to ensure that each feature and partnership aligns with the overarching goal of making sustainability more accessible and impactful.
What sets Planted apart is its distinctive blend of automation and tangible environmental engagement. Rather than limiting clients to strict compliance, the platform encourages active participation in climate-positive projects. As a result, Planted not only measures impact but also enables companies to take real steps toward reducing their environmental footprint—from carbon offsets to local reforestation.
TechVision Fonds (TVF), the lead investor, is recognized for its support of high-potential technology startups in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It provides more than just capital—its network of over 150 successful companies gives Planted immediate access to potential customers, partners, and advisors. WENVEST Capital brings complementary expertise in scaling tech-driven ventures, while neoteq ventures, AWS Gründungsfonds, and Smart Infrastructure Ventures add additional resources and strategic guidance to accelerate Planted’s growth.
The startup’s roster of angel investors includes Nina Kani, Felix Schürholz (Co-Founder & MD of SoSafe), Frank Piotraschke (CRO of SoSafe), Arno Nonnen, and Julius Göllner (ARRtist).
