LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Siddhartha Mukherjee, renowned cancer researcher and Pulitzer-winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies, have launched Manas AI, an AI-powered drug discovery startup. The company has secured $24.6 million in seed funding from Hoffman, General Catalyst, and Greylock.

Focusing initially on treatments for breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma, Manas AI plans to leverage artificial intelligence to design novel molecules. These molecules will then undergo rigorous testing in wet labs to evaluate their therapeutic potential.

AI Drug Discovery: Modest Beginnings Amid Big Players

Manas AI’s seed funding may seem modest compared to other startups in the AI-driven drug discovery space. Xaira, for instance, launched with $1 billion in initial funding last year, while Treeline Biosciences raised $422 million. Despite this, Manas AI’s founders believe their focused approach and strategic partnerships will set them apart.

During a presentation tied to his new book, Superagency, Hoffman explained that Manas AI would utilize Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and its advanced AI capabilities to accelerate drug discovery. Microsoft, which acquired LinkedIn in 2016, brings “deep domain knowledge in AI” to the venture, reinforcing the startup’s technical foundation.

The Manas AI Approach: Combining AI and Wet Lab Testing

Manas AI aims to bridge the gap between AI-designed drug molecules and real-world applications. Its strategy combines computational models with laboratory testing to ensure the viability of its discoveries. By focusing on specific cancer types, the startup seeks to make targeted progress in areas where new treatments are urgently needed.

Hoffman’s close ties to Microsoft play a pivotal role in Manas AI’s technical capabilities.
