Revolutionizing Motors UK Startup AEM Secures £23M in Series A Funding

In the battle against climate change, the path to electrification is clear, but the journey is anything but ordinary
November 27, 2023

In the ever-evolving landscape of combating climate change, one UK startup is taking the lead in shaping a sustainable future. Advanced Electric Machines (AEM), a trailblazer in electric motor innovation, has just secured an impressive £23 million in Series A funding. Spearheaded by London-based heavyweights Legal & General Capital and Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital, along with participation from Par Equity and other notable investors, this funding is poised to propel AEM's mission to new heights.

AEM is not just about creating electric motors; it's on a mission to redefine the industry's very core. By developing an alternative technology that eliminates copper, AEM is setting the stage for the future of sustainable electric motors. The recently secured funding will serve as the catalyst for AEM's expansion, scaling up production capacity and creating a surge of 40 green jobs in the next two years.

Founded in 2017 as a spin-out of Newcastle University, AEM has emerged as a key player in the electric motor arena. Their cutting-edge motors and powertrain systems boast a unique feature – the absence of rare-earth magnets and copper windings. This not only reduces costs but also enhances recyclability and reduces the environmental footprint of the motors.

The HDSRM motor, designed for commercial vehicles, is already in production and set to be unleashed on markets in the UK, Europe, North America, and APAC. AEM plans to further accelerate the development of its SSRD motor for passenger vehicles, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.

AEM's approach extends beyond creating sustainable motors; it's about delivering superior performance and efficiency without compromising on quality. Their motors, despite being eco-friendly, promise a performance edge over their counterparts, making them a game-changer in the electric vehicle landscape.

The funding secured by AEM not only marks a significant milestone for the startup but also paves the way for a sustainable tomorrow. The strategic infusion of capital will drive AEM's research and development initiatives, bringing them closer to their vision of being the world’s most sustainable electric motor manufacturer.

As AEM embarks on this transformative journey, the funding received is not just an investment in a startup; it's an endorsement of a vision. Prof. James Widmer, CEO and co-founder of AEM, expresses gratitude for the market's vote of confidence, emphasizing the role AEM is poised to play in making the electric vehicle sector truly sustainable.

In an era where sustainability is paramount, AEM stands at the forefront, ushering in a new era of electric motors. With a commitment to green innovation and a fresh injection of funds, AEM is set to leave an indelible mark on the electric vehicle landscape, creating not just motors but a sustainable legacy.
