Supabase, the open-source platform that has made a name for itself as a developer-friendly alternative to Google’s Firebase, just raised an impressive $80 million in its Series C round. Led by Peak XV and Craft Ventures, this funding brings Supabase’s total raised to $196 million, further solidifying its position in the competitive database space. CEO Paul Copplestone, in an exclusive interview, hinted that this latest round comes with an increased valuation—though specifics weren’t disclosed.
As AI continues to dominate tech trends, Supabase’s growth is heavily driven by its support for the pgvector extension, a tool that enables Postgres databases to handle AI-related tasks efficiently. Copplestone explained how Supabase was an early adopter of pgvector, giving it an edge over other cloud providers and leading to about 10% of its active databases now supporting AI applications.
What’s particularly notable is Supabase’s growing appeal to major enterprises. Initially seen as an open-source Firebase competitor, the company’s embrace of Postgres has paid off, with companies like Meta, Netflix, Microsoft, and even GitHub using Supabase’s services. It’s not just startups—40% of the latest Y Combinator class uses Supabase, and the platform has become a key player in powering experimental and cutting-edge projects for large organizations.
Supabase’s broader product suite—ranging from database services to authentication and storage—has also helped it gain traction. Some companies even start by using its authentication tools before expanding into other areas of the platform. With over 900,000 sign-ups in just four years, the platform’s simplicity and the popularity of Postgres have made it a favorite among developers.
This latest funding round includes new and familiar backers, such as Avra Capital, Coatue, Felicis, and Y Combinator. Investors are keen to see how Supabase’s recent partnership with Vercel will impact its trajectory. As more enterprises and developers seek out powerful, user-friendly database solutions, Supabase looks poised to continue its upward climb.
