Viam has raised $30 million in Series C funding to expand its platform, which helps companies bring AI, data, and automation into the physical world. The round was led by Union Square Ventures, with support from Battery Ventures and Neurone, a European investment group that works closely with some of Italy’s most well-known industrial families.
This new investment brings Viam’s total funding to $117 million since it launched in 2020.
Viam isn’t another software company building apps for your phone or web browser. They focus on industries where physical devices and machines—like factory equipment, smart appliances, or robotic systems—need to get smarter using data and automation.
This means Viam’s platform helps companies connect their devices to AI-powered tools, making them smarter, more efficient, and able to improve themselves over time.
The idea is simple: the same way software transformed phones into smartphones, Viam wants to help hardware companies unlock that same kind of data-driven transformation.
“Viam is bridging the critical gap between AI, data, and the countless devices we interact with every day,” said Albert Wenger, Partner at Union Square Ventures. “Eliot and his team are building a world-class operation in New York City, and we're thrilled to continue supporting them.”
The new funding will go toward scaling Viam globally, especially in Europe. Through Neurone’s involvement, Viam hopes to strengthen its presence in Italy, a country known for its manufacturing powerhouses and family-run industrial giants.
Viam also plans to expand its engineering and sales teams, develop new product features, and partner with more companies in industries like climate tech, marine technology, and industrial manufacturing.
“We work directly with Italy's leading industrial families who are actively thinking about what the future holds for the sector and the technology that shapes it,” said Teodoro D'Ambrosio, Founder and Partner at Neurone. “Hardware sectors serving the physical world are still missing that software-driven inflection point that fueled exponential growth in other domains, like Android in mobile. Viam is building that missing layer, and we're excited to partner with Eliot and the team on that vision.”
Founded in 2020 by Eliot Horowitz, who previously co-founded MongoDB, Viam is tackling a common problem many companies face: their hardware teams and software teams speak different languages.
When companies build physical machines—like smart kitchen equipment or industrial robots—hardware engineers often work separately from the software teams building the AI or automation tools that run on those machines. Viam’s platform acts like a shared workspace where both sides can collaborate more easily.
This isn’t just a tool for engineers. For companies, it means they can launch new smart products faster, update existing machines through software (instead of expensive hardware upgrades), and future-proof their devices so they stay useful longer.
Viam has Union Square Ventures as a long-time backer, and they returned to lead this Series C round. They’re known for investing in companies that change how industries work.
Battery Ventures also participated, adding their expertise in backing enterprise technology companies.
On the European side, the new investor Neurone brought along co-investors including the families behind Ferrari, Camozzi Group, and Pasubio. These families aren’t just wealthy backers—they run some of Italy’s most respected industrial companies, making them important partners as Viam expands into Europe.
"We're fortunate to have incredible partners like Union Square Ventures who are eager to expand their commitment to what we're building," said Eliot Horowitz, Founder and CEO of Viam. "At the same time, we're excited to collaborate with Neurone to advance our global ambitions and further the momentum we're already seeing in Italy and in Europe more broadly."
