Navigating payroll in Africa can be a daunting task for businesses, especially given the diverse regulations and hybrid work environments across the continent. Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) still rely on Excel and Google Sheets, finding complex payroll systems too costly or difficult to manage. While global players like Rippling and Gusto have simplified payroll for international firms, their solutions often fall short in the African market.
Enter Workpay, a YC-backed startup making waves with its local approach to payroll and HR. The company, which has now raised $5 million in Series A funding, is set to transform how businesses handle payroll across Africa. This latest funding round, led by pan-African venture firm Norrsken22, includes participation from Visa, Plug n Play, and a host of existing investors such as Y Combinator and Saviu Ventures.
Founded by Paul Kimani and COO Jackson Kungu, Workpay is more than just a payroll platform. It offers a comprehensive suite of HR and benefits solutions tailored for businesses with operations in Africa. Whether it’s a local manufacturer in Nigeria or a cross-border company with employees across multiple countries, Workpay provides tools to streamline payroll management, compliance, and performance tracking.
Workpay's evolution from a payroll-only solution to a full-stack HR service reflects its commitment to meeting the diverse needs of African businesses. With features that range from time and attendance tracking for manufacturing firms to performance management tools for remote teams, Workpay is adapting its offerings to the changing landscape of work.
The startup’s recent funding boost will help expand its financial services, including medical and vehicle insurance, and explore new AI-driven performance management tools. Workpay’s growth trajectory is impressive, having added nearly 500 new businesses in the past 16 months and now serving over 1,000 clients across 20 African countries. Despite competition from global giants like Deel and Payoneer, Workpay's focus on localized solutions and deep understanding of regional nuances position it strongly in the African market.
As Workpay continues to scale and refine its services, the company’s fresh capital will drive its mission to provide a robust, comprehensive payroll and HR solution for businesses across the continent.
