xMEMS Labs has closed a $21 million Series D funding round led by Boardman Bay Capital Management, with participation from Cloudview Capital, CDIB-TEN Capital, Harbinger Venture Capital, SIG Asia Investments (an affiliate of Susquehanna International Group), and other strategic investors. The company, which created the world's first piezoelectric MEMS loudspeaker and cooling chip, will use the capital to accelerate mass production and global commercialization of its solid-state silicon speakers and micro-cooling solutions.
The timing reflects strong commercial traction. Major consumer device manufacturers are increasingly adopting xMEMS' technology as they work to solve thermal management and audio quality challenges in AI-powered products.
As artificial intelligence capabilities expand into consumer devices, manufacturers face mounting pressure to manage heat, conserve space, and maintain audio clarity in increasingly compact products. Traditional coil motor speakers and cooling fans struggle to meet these demands, particularly in ultra-thin form factors like AI glasses, smartwatches, and high-performance earbuds.
"This fundraise comes at a moment of rapidly accelerating commercial momentum," said Joseph Jiang, CEO and Co-Founder of xMEMS Labs. "Leading consumer device makers are all confronting the same challenge: how to deliver the performance AI demands while also achieving size, weight, thermal management, and audio quality goals. Our piezoMEMS platform solves this. With the support of Boardman Bay Capital Management and our investors, we're expanding manufacturing and fueling the next wave of piezoMEMS innovation."
xMEMS has developed a monolithic MEMS platform using thin-film piezoelectric materials to deliver performance previously impossible at small scales. The fully solid-state design eliminates moving parts found in legacy components, resulting in improved reliability and drastically reduced form factors.
The Series D investment will support full-scale production capacity for xMEMS' two flagship product families: Sycamore, the world's thinnest and lightest high-fidelity MEMS loudspeaker, and µCooling, the industry's first chip-scale, solid-state air-moving solution. Both products address specific bottlenecks in AI device design.
Sycamore delivers rich, full-range sound in ultra-slim form factors, making it suitable for AI glasses, headphones, and smartwatches where space is at a premium. µCooling provides silent, vibration-free active thermal management in space-constrained devices including AI glasses, smartphones, and solid-state drives. The funding will also support deeper partnerships with global original equipment manufacturers and continued research and development.
"xMEMS is at the heart of a significant shift in hardware design driven by AI," said Will Graves, Chief Investment Officer at Boardman Bay Capital Management. "Their technology directly addresses key pain points for today's AI devices – managing heat, conserving space, and delivering crystal-clear audio in increasingly compact and powerful products. We believe piezoMEMS will be a foundational building block for the AI hardware era."
Founded in 2018, xMEMS Labs has built a substantial intellectual property position with over 250 granted patents worldwide. The company's technology has earned industry recognition, including Best MEMS Solution and Startup of the Year at Sensors Converge 2025.
Over the past year, the company has transitioned from development to commercial deployment, with many of the world's leading consumer technology companies now integrating xMEMS solutions into their next-generation AI device architectures. The piezoMEMS platform enables thinner, lighter, and higher-performing edge AI products by fundamentally rethinking how audio and thermal components function at the chip level.
The company was founded by Joseph Jiang and a team of engineers focused on applying semiconductor manufacturing techniques to acoustic and thermal challenges. This approach has allowed xMEMS to create components that can be produced using standard MEMS fabrication processes, improving manufacturability and cost efficiency as production scales.
Boardman Bay Capital Management brings specific expertise in hard tech and semiconductor investing. The venture capital firm has backed companies at the forefront of AI infrastructure, optical and photonic systems, chip design, and data movement.
