Published in npj Digital Medicine, the Flinders University-led study shows how multi-night monitoring can identify obstructive sleep apnoea cases missed by traditional single-night sleep studies

Paris, July 9, 2026: Withings Health Solutions, a global provider of connected health solutions for remote patient monitoring, today announced results from a new peer-reviewed clinical study led by researchers at the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute Sleep Health. The study found that multi-night monitoring with the Withings Sleep Analyser, an under-mattress sleep monitoring device that automatically monitors breathing disturbances during sleep, achieved 86% sensitivity and 90% specificity for detecting moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) compared with in-home polysomnography.

Obstructive sleep apnoea affects an estimated one billion adults worldwide and is associated with serious health risks, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and reduced quality of life. Despite this, diagnosis continues to rely primarily on a single night of testing, even though previous research suggests that at least 20% of people with suspected OSA may be misdiagnosed and up to 50% may have their disease severity misclassified, as a single-night assessment may not fully capture how the condition fluctuates. As night-to-night variability has also been associated with poorer cardiovascular outcomes, understanding how sleep apnoea changes over time may support more informed clinical assessment.

Published in npj Digital Medicine, a Nature Portfolio journal, the study is among the first prospective clinical evaluations of multi-night home monitoring using the Withings Sleep Analyser in adults referred for suspected obstructive sleep apnoea. The study followed 100 adults, with 92 participants included in the final analysis. Participants underwent standard overnight polysomnography while also using the device to monitor their sleep at home over several weeks. Comparing the two approaches, researchers found that single-night testing could misclassify a meaningful proportion of patients, particularly those whose sleep apnoea fluctuated over time or who slept differently during laboratory testing.

“As healthcare increasingly looks beyond episodic testing to understand patients over longer periods, this study shows how longitudinal monitoring can complement existing diagnostic pathways and provide clinicians with additional clinical context,” said Antoine Pivron, VP of Withings Health Solutions.

What the Study Found:

  • Strong diagnostic performance: The Withings Sleep Analyser achieved 86% sensitivity and 90% specificity compared with in-home polysomnography for detecting moderate-to-severe OSA.
  • Valuable additional diagnostic information: In 10 of the 45 participants diagnosed with moderate-to-severe OSA by either polysomnography or the Withings Sleep Analyser, multi-night monitoring provided additional information that may have changed the clinical diagnosis.
  • Strong real-world adherence: Participants recorded a median of 80 nights of monitoring over three months, while 92% completed at least 14 valid nights during the first month. Nearly 80% found the device easy to use.

Lead author and sleep expert Dr Bastien Lechat from the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute Sleep Health said the findings highlight an important limitation of current diagnostic approaches. “Our findings show that sleep apnoea can vary considerably from one night to the next, so if you only measure it once, you may not capture the true severity of the condition.”

While further research is needed to determine how best to integrate multi-night data into routine practice, the findings support the use of multi-night monitoring alongside traditional sleep studies, providing clinicians with additional context to better understand how obstructive sleep apnoea presents beyond a single laboratory assessment.

The paper, Zero-burden multi-night monitoring with AI-enabled technology reduces obstructive sleep apnoea misdiagnosis, is published in npj Digital Medicine and is available here. Withings Health Solutions supported the study through in-kind donation of devices and partial funding of a research assistant to support data collection. The company had no role in the study design, data collection, analysis, manuscript preparation, or the decision to publish.
