Tesla Recalls Cybertruck Due to 'Trapped Pedal' Issue

Tesla has announced a voluntary recall of 3,878 Cybertrucks to address a "stuck pedal" issue in a viral TikTok video
April 21, 2024

Tesla has announced a voluntary recall of 3,878 Cybertrucks to address a "stuck pedal" problem highlighted in a viral TikTok video posted by owner Jose Martinez.

The issue involves a pad on top of the Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal, which could become loose and get trapped in the interior trim, leading to unintended acceleration. Tesla's filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) acknowledged this problem.

Tesla's service department plans to replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly free of charge for affected owners. According to Tesla's defect notice, an "unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal. Residual lubricant reduced the retention of the pad to the pedal."

Tesla first became aware of this issue on March 31, 2024, and decided to issue a voluntary recall of the Cybertrucks on April 12.

Despite CEO Elon Musk's high-profile unveiling event on Nov. 30, 2023, Cybertruck deliveries have been low, with fewer than 4,000 units shipped.

The company recently reported disappointing first-quarter vehicle deliveries for 2024, totaling 386,810 cars, an 8.5% drop from the same quarter last year. Tesla is scheduled to report its first-quarter earnings on Tuesday.

CNBC reached out to the NHTSA about the trapped pedal issue on April 14, following Martinez’s video. The NHTSA confirmed that it had received three vehicle owner complaints about the Cybertruck and was aware of the video. The agency stated that it utilizes various data sources, including social media and vehicle owner forums, in its enforcement processes.

Tesla's voluntary recall of the Cybertruck addresses safety concerns related to unintended acceleration. As the company works to resolve this issue, attention remains focused on its first-quarter earnings report due on Tuesday.
